Catalina Island Humane Society is located in the town of Avalon, on beautiful Santa Catalina Island, which is off the coast of Southern California.

Even Catalina Island residents may not realize that our Humane Society, in many ways, acts as the primary animal control agency for the community of Avalon, and does so with extremely limited funding.  We currently have only one part-time employee, and rely heavily on the efforts of our tireless volunteers and the donations we receive.

Most cities and counties on the mainland receive significant government funding to stem the tide of homeless animals and enforce humane treatment.  Avalon receives little to no county funding for animal control, though the City of Avalon often makes an annual grant of $10,000 to support our programs and services.  Every dime of those funds has been used to continue the Humane Society's important work in sterilizing animals.

We also receive dozens of calls each month to deal with a variety of sick and injured animals (domestic and wild), vaccinate strays, and feed and monitor several controlled populations of homeless cats.

Make a difference in the quality of the care of all of the Island's animals by getting involved in whatever way you can!

Dog Workshop Update
Seventeen Dogs Attend Obedience Class!

Seventeen dogs and their owners joined trainer Terri Lattanzio for a basic dog obedience class sponsored by the Catalina Island Humane Society. "We were thrilled with the turn-out," said Dianne Stone, a Humane Society board member.

The first class was Sunday Oct. 19th, and attendees learned how to communicate better and more consistently with their dogs as Terri coached the group through basic commands.

About half the class is aspiring to have their animals certified as therapy dogs. The next class will be held at 2pm on Sunday, Nov. 2nd at Avalon Schools. Call (310) 510-1900 for more information, or to join in the canine fun!

February 2007 - AmeriCorps Volunteers Complete Shelter Repairs

Thanks to our AmeriCorps Volunteers
Under the supervision of former CIHS Board Vice-President Ann Kuns, seven volunteers from AmeriCorps put crowbars, hammers, and screwdrivers to the job, battling rusty hardware and rotten wood to remove and repair the ramp surface and portions of the support structure at our trailer.

The volunteers returned the following evening to complete the repairs and clean up the exterior. Local residents and supporters Karl Karstens and Mark Tasca were also instrumental in completing the job! Thanks to all of you!
